MISSION
CHInyc was formed by parents in 2024 to foster the development of a disability forward, residential micro-community for people with and without significant disabilities.
We are introducing a new name for this model, which will be known as an Inclusion Micro Community, or IMC. Our model will prioritize individuals and families who want to create a new, non-certified, self-directed and sustainable model of housing, supports and community, utilizing both public and private supports.
We envision CHInyc becoming a part of the fabric of NYC and beyond, creating a global example for a replicable model that is conducive to autonomy and housing stability for people with and without significant disability. CHInyc anticipates remaining an active collective for generations to come to ensure the dignity and safety of our most vulnerable citizens.
The CDC reports that 3,984,636 people, or about one in four people in New York state, have a functional disability. If we imagine that concentrated into one city, that’s more than double the entire population of Manhattan. Of these people, an estimated 76% in NYC still live with a parent or family member: source CIDNY.ORG
People with intellectual disabilities are more likely to become homeless at an older age due to the breakdown of a relationship or the death of a primary caregiver and there is little hope on the horizon without intervention. Our most vulnerable are facing an immediate and extreme crisis.
The model we support will be committed to autonomy, accessibility, inclusivity, and a person-centered approach for the supported residents. We will also present an affordable housing option for neurotypical residents, using existing government incentives and benefits.
We strive to empower individuals of all abilities to live independently and comfortably with a lifetime of housing security. The supported residences will provide inhabitants with the opportunity to age comfortably in place, creating a naturally occurring retirement community or NORC.
Overlapping needs will also help cities save money by concentrating some supports. Designing for disability improves lives for all.
